Updated Extra Compensation Guidelines

Procedures for qualifying for and requesting extra compensation on sponsored projects can be found in SPA’s recently updated extra compensation guidance, located on the SPA website. https://www.niu.edu/spa/resources/guidelines/faculty-compensation-pay.shtml.

Faculty grant-related work is generally expected to be covered by academic-year release time or summer salary. Compensation above base salary is allowed only in rare, well-justified cases where the work is clearly outside normal duties and other compensation options are not feasible. Any extra compensation must be reasonable, fully documented, and approved in advance by the sponsor and the university. Internal approvals must be completed before including additional compensation in a proposal budget, and at post-award, payments can only be made if those approvals are documented.
