The National Science Foundation has announced, effective October 27, 2024, that they are implementing multifactor authentication (MFA) for Research.gov. NSF recently issued a Dear Colleague Letter (NSF 25-011) regarding this change.
- MFA Requirement: All external users must complete a one-time MFA enrollment process and use the selected MFA method to sign in to Research.gov.
- User-Specific MFA Options: The MFA options available will vary depending on the user’s assigned role in Research.gov. Users are encouraged to set up a primary MFA method and also a secondary method in case the primary is unavailable, such as when they do not have their mobile phone.
- Phishing-Resistant MFA: Users can continue to use Login.gov for signing in, provided they utilize phishing-resistant MFA methods.
- Training Resources: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) will be available on the new About Signing Into Research.gov page on Research.gov Help on October 27, 2024. This new page will assist the research community to quickly enroll in MFA and learn how to sign into Research.gov with the selected MFA method.
